Saved and liberated the books I "bought" at Amazon for my Kindle. Amazon will stop offering the "Download & transfer via USB" option, so I have downloaded all 210 books. After downloading, I hunt them through Calibre and a certain plugin to remove the DRM stuff, convert the books to EPUB format so I have my private backup and can put them on a new ebook reader that is more open than the Amazon walled garden. And in future I will buy my eBooks someplace else. #ByeAmazon

Download & transfer via USB Transfer Tip: After downloading, use your USB cable to connect your computer and Kindle. Your Kindle will appear as a drive on your computer. Copy your downloaded file from your computer to your Kindle's documents folder. Starting 26 February 2025, the ‘Download & Transfer via USB’ option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the ‘Deliver or Remove from Device’ option. Learn more about managing downloads

I feel your pain, but where can I legally buy eBooks of foreign authors (like @cstross ) without drm in Germany?
Tolino is even worse.

@oneiros I always buy my books at genialokal.de, they’re DRM-free most of the time (like, 1 in 30 has DRM).

@oneiros Ja, in diesen Beschreibungen darunter steht leider Quatsch. In den allermeisten Fällen war es bei mir ein simples EPUB ohne DRM.

@oneiros Schau mal: Giovani’s Room war tatsächlich mit Adobe DRM, das Buch darüber ein epub. Leider ist das erst nach dem Kauf sichtbar.
Buch7.de könnte sonst noch ne Alternative sein, aber da hab ich keine Erfahrungen mit.

@oneiros @schreiblehrling Hint: the US edition is published by Tor.com, not Orbit (which, as a part of Hachette, is required to put DRM on everything). The Tor.com edition isn't DRM'd. If you can buy a US ebook copy, it'll work for you.
