Found a nice vitricolous lichen yesterday in New York. I'm assuming it's some sort of rock shield (Xanthoparmelia) but not sure which one. Two photos from today's walk!

Loved the blue coloring on that #mossy rock, which marks the edge of a competing #lichen. Before I saw that, I thought it was just a blank space.

Moss and pale lichen grow on a large and gorgeous rock.

A flowering tree sports cheerful pale blossoms, looking painterly as fuck.

A little #ForestFloor vignette from yesterday afternoon. There is no fresh green here, yet, though Aspen and Willow catkins are bursting out and should soon be flowering, leaves and non-woody plants will follow..

A fallen bit of birch trunk, a hand's width or less, crosses the frame from side to side in the top half. It has become completely covered in the small multiply branching 'fronds' of a pale blue-green lichen. The surface is dusted with reddish fallen spruce needles and bits of golden green moss have taken hold as well, including one spreading clump near the centre top. Below, in front centre is a small rosette of wintergreen, it's several deep green slightly purple-red limned leaves- clearly last year's, not fresh- are highlighted against the pale lichen. The wintergreen leaves rise from a layer of faded grey-brown poplar leaves from last year, wet between from recent snow melt and rain.

The many orange tips of this ground lichen were impossible to miss as I climbed up the trail, as if the lichen was hoping to be noticed. I didn't want to let this organism down, and here we are

13 years of moss and lichen growth.

I hung this helmet up in 2012. It was the end of a transcontinental motorcycle trip during which one of my buddies died.

This is my monument to Mark.

A black Harley-Davidson motorcycle helmet hangs on a wood and chicken wire greenhouse door. The top surface is smooth, but the under surface has transformed into a moss and lichen garden. Several tufts of spiky orange/green moss grow above the Harley badge. Several ghostly green lichens stretch arms out into the air.
