How do we separate historical #fact from #fiction?

Three videos show how historians examine primary sources (like artifacts and eyewitness accounts) and secondary sources (later analyses) to piece together events from 1800s #Britain, including the story behind why #London police are called "bobbies." 📚📜

Silvertown Tunnel opened today. The Grauniad quoted:

“Expecting people to get off their bikes, wait up to 12 minutes and then lug their bikes on to a bus is ridiculous, especially when the entire area around the tunnel is dangerous for cycling and filled with high-risk junctions.”

Not my experience at noon today. Went from south to north. Bus waiting, took 4 of us and within minutes we were comparing the norther dedicated cycleways to the mish-mash south of the river. Bit like comparing the North & South circs.

Not much traffic. The tolls may deter enough drivers to unclog the Blackwall Tunnel so Silvertown only contribution is to vastly improve cycle and bus transportation across the river.

What does Keir Starmer stand for? It's been five years since Keir Starmer replaced Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour party.

Despite winning a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, many are still uncertain what the prime minister represents, whilst assessments of his time as Labour leader have become more negative.

"Whenever the #author and #playwright Samantha Ellis tries to define her heritage to people, she often finds them correcting her. “So many times I’ve said I’m an #Iraqi #Jew and been… told ‘you mean you’re mixed’ or ‘which parent is which?’ or just ‘how weird’,” she writes in her richly detailed #memoir, in which she explores the complex, centuries-old history of the Iraqi-#Jewish community and its vanishing language, #Judeo-Iraqi #Arabic.

The daughter of Iraqi-Jewish #refugees who came separately to #London with their families during periods of persecution for the community in #Baghdad, Ellis is moved to seek out #stories, expressions and objects that will fill some of the gaps in that #history when she realises that she lacks the vocabulary to pass on the language of her childhood to her own young son."
