-hold! My flowery old friend. Doesn't she look fab in her fluffy moss coat? I'm totally jealous of her style.

If you pass a patch of moss with a reddish tinge, do yourself a favor and get down low (or if you have bad knees like me, put your phone camera down low, upside down), to check out those gorgeous sporophytes.

This morning’s hike had some #mosstodon views worth sharing. These will also work for #ThickTrunkThursday - so may need to boost ‘em later
Off to find some tea to warm up. Hiked to a small waterfall in the rain. You don’t really appreciate how depauperate the north is until you walk through a cloud forest and are astonished by new things with each step.
Gyromitra esculenta.
A common fungus on southern Vancouver Island in early spring. Guidebooks list it as "toxic" and there have been fatalities recorded from consumption. The primary toxin, gyromitrin, is water soluble so boiling the mushrooms and discarding the water removes most of the toxin. But, gyromtrin hydrolyzes to monomethylhydrazine (aka rocket fuel) that is toxic when inhaled. So prepare them outside or in a room with good ventilation.
