Australia is in an extinction crisis – why isn’t it an issue at this election?

"Over the past decade, more than 550 Australian species have been either newly recognised as at risk of extinction or moved a step closer to being erased from the planet."

"Analysis shows 1,964,200 hectares of koala habitat was cleared between 2012 and 2021 – 81% of that in Queensland."

"Australia tops global rankings for mammal extinction – at least 33 species have died out since European invasion and colonisation – and is number two behind Indonesia for loss of biodiversity. The challenge is not only to stop the loss of habitat but to restore the environment in places it has been lost in 250 years of European-driven clearing."

Understanding the health impacts of the climate crisis
and imagining a positive future

"Climate change is the greatest threat to human health now."

"Climate change is already causing significant shifts in weather patterns and an increase in extreme weather events around the world, including droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, storms and floods."

"The major cause of pollution is the burning of fossil fuels, further motivating action on reducing GHG; adverse weather events, such as heatwaves, can acutely amplify pollution impacts."

"There is hope, there is hope - so let's go!"

Really inspiring video with a lot of low-tech and solarpunk ideas. It has alot of biosphere 2 and whole earth catalogue vibe - but on a small scale. Really nice and cozy.

Alot of the thinking and ideas are along the lines of Low Tech Magazine. For instance the mistshowers (solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2019)

You can’t go anywhere without evidence of plastic waste & while I’m up on a soapbox… the most serious problem is microplastics waste that has entered the entire food chain & the bodies of all living creatures on our planet. I read an article the other day & heard that same information echoed in the news: right now in the brains of adult humans has enough microplastics particles to make up a plastic spoon. sr+

The biosphere, earth's ecosystem, exists since the chemical evolution started in the primordial soup 4 billion years ago.
Its a complex system that changed through evolution and adapted to chaning conditions including events that caused mass extinctions.
Biodiversity is a huge factor in the resilience of earth's ecosystem. If conditions change the system changes and finds a kind of equilibrium again. You could say it regulates itself.

The market on the other hand is a system created about 3000 years ago by the species causing the most damage to the biosphere.
Under capitalism the market is used to cause a great disequilibrium.

Let's destroy the market, not the ecosystem!

A new analysis of pulses of #radioactive carbon-14 from 20th-century bomb tests reveals that #plants stock more #carbon in short-lived tissues such as leaves than previously estimated.

That means that this carbon is probably more vulnerable to re-release to the #atmosphere — potentially altering estimates of how much anthropogenic carbon the #biosphere can hold.

Warm rocky #exoplanets within the #habitable zone of Sun-like stars are favoured targets for current and future missions.

Theory indicates these #planets could be wet at formation and remain habitable long enough for life to develop.

Synthetic observations reliably point to Earth-like #biosphere surface fluxes of oxygen for systems within 10-20 parsecs.
