Athena fell over. Another one.

The one that landed safely did so on a slope with only 3 of its 4 legs on
the surface. Why didn't it fall over? Because it's about 2 times wider than it is tall. Athena is (was) about 3 times taller than it is (was) wide.

Which REALLY doesn't bode well for SpaceX's Starship, which is some 7 times taller than its diameter.

A monumentally stupid design for a spaceship intending to land on an unprepared surface.

This episode could have easily gone into my Audio Signals Podcast, where I talk about Stories, Storytelling, and Storytellers—I debated that… and as a matter of fact, I may just put it there too. But in the end, I decided to feature it on Redefining #Society & #Technology because it’s about #space, the Apollo Program, #engineering, recognition, #equality, and, ultimately, the #history of our society.

🚀 LA Made : The Other Moonshot | The story of three Black aerospace engineers in Los Angeles, who played a crucial role in America’s race to space, amid the civil unrest of the 1960s | Guest: Joanne Higgins

The Apollo #moonlanding was one of humanity’s greatest achievements—but behind the scenes, not everyone who made it possible was given their due credit. LA Made: The Other Moonshot, a new podcast from LAist Studios, tells the untold story of three Black aerospace engineers in #LosAngeles who played a critical role in the Apollo mission—while fighting for equality and recognition in an industry that barely acknowledged them.

I sat down with host Joanne Higgins to talk about why she set out to tell this story. Her godfather, Charlie Cheathem, was one of these unsung pioneers, but his contributions—like those of many Black engineers—were left out of history. |

As Joanne explains, these men didn’t just face the immense challenge of building the Apollo spacecraft; they also had to fight for the right to do their jobs, to be paid equally, and to have their work recognized.

Some of the very systems they helped design made the moon landing possible, yet their names were left off the credits. It’s a story of resilience, injustice, and ultimately, a legacy that deserves to be told.
