#arbeit

About to Go Home

It is silly. I love to travel. I enjoy staying in hotels. I love the city of Boston. Why then did spending three nights in a hotel in Boston start to bum me out? It was nice. It was fun. It was a goofy little excursion away from the norm.

Why then, with all the things that I enjoyed about the entire situation, does the idea of being able to go home after work tonight fill me up with happiness? My wife and I will be home together. We’ll eat dinner together at home. We’ll sack out on the couch after dinner and watch TV in our living room at home. We’ll sleep in our own bed tonight. We’ll wake up at home tomorrow and be back on our regular, normal daily routine.

I love to travel. I love staying in hotels. I love being in the city of Boston. I guess I just love being at home with Jen more. When you look at it that way, it’s not even a little bit surprising.

Also, there are cats at home when there were no cats in the hotel. That’s gotta count for something too, right?

I was only able to do half an hour today. I'll have to work up to an hour. However I did nearly 5 and a half miles and I burned 132 calories. I'm less worried about how many calories I'm burning. I'm more concerned with distance and time. Tomorrow I'd like to do 35 minutes. I definitely think this is an exercise I can keep up with.

A Morning Run and the Ghost Platform

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Normally I like to go for a run in the afternoon, after I have had a productive morning. This morning I went for a run first. This afternoon I have to go to an indoor meeting, which doesn't fill me with euphoria. I feel an e-mail would achieve the same thing within a few minutes. Having said this I have skipped that meeting for three or four years so I feel obligated to go this afternoon.

A morning run is not an absurd thing to do. It gets the blood flowing, and gets you to wake up properly, before a coffee has been drunk, and then the rest of the day is open to indoor activities. In theory it could also be a fantastic time to find blogging inspiration. Unfortunately this morning that did not work. I still spent more than an hour trying to think of something to write.

Ghost Migration

Last night I was toying with the idea of migrating to Ghost, to experiment with the Ghost Blogging platform. I was able to get it to work via younohost, but wanted to install it natively on a Pi. It took a while but eventually I got it to work, after some trial and error. The latest version of Ubuntu did not play well with a Pi4 but the LTE version did. I would have continued playing but it was dinner time.

Another challenge I met is that when I tried to export from my current WordPress install with the Ghost plugin it failed more than once. I need to find a way to get the data out. I suspect that a plugin is blocking the export. With more experimentation I will resolve this issue

Hugo and WordPress

WordPress suffers from being everything to everyone, so it has become slow and heavy. Hugo, on the other hand is very fast to load, and quick to update but it requires a workflow that requires running hugo, uploading files and more. Every time I update a post I have to update hundreds of static pages for my blog. By switching to Ghost I would be using a simpler, more specific CMS that is good for simple daily blogging.

And Finally

Going for a morning run, instead of an afternoon run is easy. Migrating from WordPress to Ghost requires jumping through a few hoops so there is a learning curve that I am exploring. It just requires a day or two of experimenting.

The Bad Habit of Daily Streaks

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The US has a culture of streaking. I don't mean running around naked at events. I mean of trying to do something daily for weeks, months or even years. As great as it can be, to develop consistent habits I believe that it can have a negative impact.

For months I wanted to get my daily streak of Duolingo, and eventually I got mentally tired and gave up, after 270 or more days in a row. With Kindle they encourage us to read daily which is great because reading is great, but it's detrimental because I think finishing a set number of books per month is healthier.

It's the same with blogging. Writing every day is great because we learn to think, and elaborate on ideas. It's bad too, because we generate a lot of crap, over the weeks and months of writing each day. It's worth highlighting that my decision to blog every day was to break my Facebook habit.

There was a time when Twitter and Facebook was about conversations with whom we would elaborate on projects either for work, or sports, or other. During the pandemic, especially, social media just became about wasting time. That's why spending an hour or two writing made sense. I believe that blogging is a healthy habit. "Doom Scrolling" as people call it is not.

WordPress and especially Jetpack encourages this bad habit too. Recently I noticed that my streak is going back up. I must have deactivated it for a few days.

I know of people who write a weekly, or irregular newsletter and I notice that sometimes it's just as mediocre as if it had been written over a few minutes rather than a few days.

If I had confidence in what I write I would start a newsletter on Substack or Medium but I prefer the freedom of a blog. With a blog I'm practicing the art of writing, and I'm exploring ideas. The irony is that people can read this post as an e-mail, if they choose to.

If I went to Medium and Substack I would be feeding the long tail of traffic for others, rather than gaining for myself. I would put up with more noise, without finding more engagement.

Having said this, these posts are now on Threads, Bluesky, as well as the fediverse, and with the fediverse people can comment and have a conversation natively.

I believe that writing every day is a good habit but I believe that it's better to read a certain number of books per month or year, rather than read daily. The Kindle app wants to trap us on their device, and in their library.

I need to stop giving in to streak rewards.

One day at a time…

...sometimes feels too long... When things aren't going all that well, when it can be a struggle to make ends meet, to get chores done, to find enough spoons to be somewhat functional... Sometimes even taking things one day at a time can feel like it's taking too long... If that makes any sense... When you are doing something you enjoy, when you are having fun, it sometimes feels like "time flies by". And I guess the opposite can be said, or in this case written, about non-enjoyable time seems to crawl slower than a snale climbing mount Kilimanjaro... ⛰️ And when you try to take things one day at a time, even though "simple" 24 hours can feel like they're lasting way longer than that. I spent the last three months writing a post about the previous day’s music progress the first thing each morning. Now that the music project is over… now what do I do? I got so used to that little piece of the routine that I feel confused and disorientated this morning. I felt about the same way when the year of answering daily writing prompts came to an end.

Now what?

Also… don’t you hate it when your candle burns out? It’s sad, somehow.
