In around 1900, Skagway, Alaska, was home to a bar called The Office.

And its proprietor was none other than my namesake, Sam Roberts (no relation as far as I know).

What a fitting image to receive as I move to a new office — the first that's not in my home — so thank you David Butler for spotting the transom lettering.

I've been taking part in a photo a day from somewhere beginning with a letter of the alphabet on Instagram and we're up to W, and since it's #TravelTuesday here here's today's submission: the White Pass Scenic Railway on the #Alaska and #Canada border, taken about 18 months ago.

We'd docked at the port of #Skagway, taken a bus over the border into Canada, then the #train back for the views. Gorgeous.

Portrait orientation shot taken from the platform between two carriages on an old-style train, leaning out of the right side in order to take a shot that includes some of the half dozen or so carriages ahead of us as they round a bend in mountainous landscape. To our right the gravel under the train tracks ends abruptly in a steep downwards slope of thick green grass and wildflowers before meeting a line of conifer trees. Their tops reach only a little above our eyeline. Behind the trees the high slope of a hill becoming a mountain disappears out of view, its sides dark greens of browning tree tops becoming the thick grass of the heights where trees can't take root then the rockier patches of the more sheer core of the mountain. The shiny, dark green train carriages with their red roofs curves slightly in from the left before straightening as the gentle S of the bend we're on turns back on itself. The landscape in front slopes in layers of hills coming from the right until it meets a ridge of pale mountains, their jagged peaks with patches of snow partly obscured by low ribbons of clouds. Left of the train, at the front, more conifers reach up showing how close we're passing to the trees there. It feels exhilarating, chilly but fresh and filled with mountain air.
