zomg, this is fantastic - from the Getty Open Content collection.

These illustrations were created in the 1500s by Joris Hoefnagel (Flemish, / Hungarian, 1542 - 1600) as guides on constructing the letters of the alphabet.

watercolor illustration of how to construct the letters q and r, surrounded by fantastical made up characters and objects. There is a head of a made up character in the middle with what sort of looks like a fountain coming out of his head. There are snakes with wings to either side of him, their bodies wrapped around ornate poles on either side. Around his tongue is a giant ring with a fish hook hanging off of it, and some creature has been caught by it below. Along the bottom are some ornate scrolled wood with heads of made up characters on top of each. Oh. in the middle of this are also the examples of how to properly draw the letters q and r.
this one is for the letters f and g, likewise surrounded by fantasy illustrations. This one has a different made up character's head in the middle. To either side of him are naked mermaids that are attached to scrolls along the bottom - like they might be on a ship. There are owls perched on ornate vases that seem to be perched on top of the mermaids heads.
this one is for the letters s (thank you @DenRigtigeFrank for clarifying that the letter s used to be written like an r) and t. the character in the middle sort of looks like a crab. with a two-headed eagle at the top and some kind of alien looking fish or bugs along the sides.
this one is for the capital letter R. There is the head of perhaps an angel looking very worried in the middle, with a pipe organ below and globes on pillars on either side - each globe with a number of things sticking out of it. Hanging from above are golden crowns with crosses sticking up through their centers.
