I saw some lovely old trees at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park today! The Ash and the Field Maple are ancient according to the Woodland Trust, and the Oak is veteran age (i.e. middle-aged, like me )

Next to each ancient/veteran tree there's a wooden marker which is clearly visible from a distance, so the whole process of finding these trees was much easier than I expected. The Woodland Trust's map came in very handy too as always. (You can search for trees here: https://ati.woodlandtrust.org.uk/tree-search/)

An ancient Ash tree, which has become hollowed out over time but is still alive and kicking! The trunk is like a hollow half-shell, and it has a thick crown of slim branches tipped with black buds.

A veteran Pedunculate Oak, backlit by the mid-morning sun. It has a split trunk, and not much sign of new spring growth so far.

An ancient Field Maple, which is quite small and inconspicuous despite its advanced age. The trunk is forked, and the branches have a lot of new buds coming through.

I have a photo for #ThickTrunkThursday and #Mosstodon I photographed this tree last week as it tried to hug me with its giant mossy tentacles.

Tree with several branches completely covered in green moss. Looks like many arms coming out of the tree.
